Description
The ACFD requested volunteer-staffed units beginning at approximately 2pm on Thursday, September 18. The FCVFD provided Utility 106 and Chief 186's vehicle for response to low-priority emergencies during the storm. In addition to these two units, FCVFD members staffed the Cherrydale VFD Light and Air unit and the Ballston VFD utility. Units remained in service to various times on Friday, September 19. Many of the volunteers staffed units for in excess of 24 hours during the two days. Volunteers responded to wires down, trees on homes, activated fire alarms, and flooding emergencies. Several FCVFD members brought personal equipment such as chainsaws and pumps in to support operations. Unofficial records show that Utility 106 responded to 14 incidents and Chief 186's vehicle was dispatched to 30 incidents in Arlington County and the City of Falls Church. Deputy Chief Paul Schomburg served as the liasion to the ACFD and coordinated all volunteer fire personnel activities during the storm. Following the storm, FCVFD members conducted "windshield" surveys in the City of Falls Church and Arlington to document hazardous conditions and storm damage. Late in the evening on Friday, September 19, Utility 106 assisted the Arlington County Office of Emergency Management during ice distribution at Washington & Lee High School. Members set up lighting and assisted CERT members in unloading a tractor-trailer of bagged ice for citizens.
