Description
The second trip to a live burn facility for the 2005 recruit class took them to the City of Alexandria Fire Department Training Facility. Despite adverse weather conditions, students completed 16 evolutions that included advancing hoselines into the first and second floors to extinguish fires. At the start of the day, students were placed in a room to watch a fire develop from ignition. This allowed them to see how a fire behaves and spreads as it grows. In addition to the actual fires, a smoke pot was used to lower visibility and increase the level of difficulty for the teams. The teams for the day were: Team 1 - F/F Schild, Recruits Beck, Davis, Schaefer Team 2 - F/F Melnick, Recruits Vilpors, LeNard, McCarry Team 3 - F/F Briller, Recruits Greear, Rahn, Haley Team 4 - F/F Fortner, F/F Richardson, F/F Pardi, Recruits Strickland, Donahue Many thanks to Lieutenant Santano of the Alexandria Fire Department for his support and guidance in preparation for the training. Thanks also go to the Logistics Section of the Arlington County Fire Department for their assistance with PPE and SCBA. The straw bales used for the evolutions were obtained from Ridge Limited of Manassas. The City of Alexandra provided the wood pallets.
