Description
Members from Falls Church, Clarendon, and Cherrydale VFD participated in a training exercise at the Alexandria Fire Department Burn Building using a newly constructed maze and entanglement exercise. The drill was organized by Lieutenant Schloss and Assistant Chief Evinger with the assistance of Alexandria FD Training Academy staff. The maze required firefighters to practice entering confined spaces and self-rescue techniques while being timed. In addition to time constraints, air consumption was also monitored to evaluate members' ability to conserve air under stress. The maze presented a challenge not only in its tight spaces, but also disoriented members and caused some personnel to mistakenly exit through the entrance door. The best time of the day was 7 minutes 31 seconds with 1900 pounds of air consumed. Other times during the day were: 7:46 15:26 9:42 18:56 9:44 7:37 (2nd attempt) 13:48 10:35 (2nd attempt) The entanglement exercise consisted of a confined area where firefighter were required to navigate through a web of wires and cables hung to simulate conditions potentially encountered following a ceiling collapse. Members had to practice self-rescue techniques and disentanglement maneuvers.
