Description
Assistant Chief Evinger, Deputy Chief Schloss, and Captain Sisler attended this pilot program at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave, VA during the weekend of August 20 and 21, 2005. The course is designed to familiarize structural firefighters with the hazards and types of emergencies associated with general aviation aircraft. Topics within the curriculum included general components of an aircraft, controls found in aircraft, facilities at airports, universal signage and communications used in aviation, fuel types and hazards, command considerations during aircraft emergencies, and tactical considerations for typical aircraft emergencies. The tactical portion of the course focused on using structural firefighting apparatus in lieu of specialized ARFF apparatus during aircraft accidents. The course included a trip to the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport for a tour of the facility and "hands-on" familiarization with aircraft, fueling facilities, hangars, and operations areas. Many thanks to Chief Jim Nilo, Chief Gary Craun, and the energetic public safety staff at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport for making this an excellent learning experience.
