Description
Seven volunteers from the Cherrydale, Arcola-Pleasant Valley, and Falls Church Volunteer Fire Departments participated in this 16 hour certification course conducted by the Falls Church VFD. The course consisted of 8 hours of classroom instruction followed by 8 hours of practical exercises. Students were required to drive ambulances through a series of obstacles and then undergo a road test with an instructor evaluating their technique. The obstacles included a serpentine, diminishing clearance, offset alley, 200' straight run, and a loading dock. Some portions of the course allowed clearances of only inches for the ambulance to fit through. The course was led by Chief Evinger with assistance from Chief Schomburg, Captain Sisler, Firefighter Lowry, Firefighter Schloss, and EMT Katzif during the practical evolutions. The Washington Metropolitain Area Transit Authority allowed full access to their large parking area at the West Falls Church Metro Station for the obstacle course. The obstacle course was set up using cones borrowed from Infrastrucutre Corporation of America (ICA), a highway maintenance contractor. The classroom portion of the course was held in the FCVFD meeting hall at Station 6.
