Description
The recruits capped off their educational experience with a trip to the City of Alexandria Fire Department burn building. Four different scenarios provided the recruits with hands-on fire behavior, fire stream, ventilation, and simulated response experience. The first exercise introduced the recruits to the hostile environment at a controlled pace and allowed them to observe fire development in a compartmentalized area. They spent time outside the burn room watching the fire develop and then were placed inside the burn room to experience the heat at different levels of the room. The penetrating effect on their protective equipment of the steam produced during fire extinguishment was also illustrated. The second and third sets of evolutions placed the teams into a fire attack scenario on the 1st and 2nd floors followed by ventilation of the burn room. The recruits advanced a hoseline that was pre-deployed and charged. The fourth set of evolutions required the "first due" team of recruits to don their SCBA while seated in the pumper and then deploy their attack line to simulate arrival at a fire scene. The final set of evolutions again placed the recruits into a fire attack mode, however their route of entry to the burn room was altered for more complicated hoseline management. A special thank you to Lieutenant Marc Timbrook of the Alexandria Fire Department for his consistent assistance and support of our live fire training events.
