Description
During the weekend of March 16th and 17th, 2002, volunteer recruits from throughout Arlington were instructed on various engine company operations. The evolutions included pulling and repacking hose, breathing apparatus, and hose tower drills. The hose tower drill was designed to test the physical capabilities of the recruits. It included walking and crawling up and down an embankment, crawling across a parking lot, climbing 4 flights of stairs to the top of the tower, lowering and hoisting a 25 pound weight from a 4th floor window, and carrying a 40 pound roll of hose up and down the tower. All of this was expected to be completed without stopping and using only the air provided by the self-contained breathing apparatus. A total of 19 recruits participated in the class instructed by senior members of the Falls Church VFD, Arlington VFD, and Ballston VFD.
