Description
Fifteen volunteers from the Arlington, Ballston, Cherrydale, Clarendon, and Falls Church Volunteer Fire Departments participated in this 2-day certification course conducted by the Falls Church VFD. The course consisted of 8 hours of classroom instruction followed by 8 hours of practical exercises. Students were required to drive ambulances through a series of obstacles and then undergo a road test with an instructor evaluating their technique. The obstacles included a serpentine, diminishing clearance, offset alley, 200' straight run, and a loading dock. Some portions of the course allowed clearances of only inches for the ambulance to fit through. The course was led by Chief Evinger with assistance from Lieutenant Holder and Firefighter Sisler during the practical evolutions. Arlington County Fire Department Captains Gibbs and Liebold provided course materials for the students and instructors. United Rentals of Merrifield allowed full access to their large storage lot for the obstacle course. The obstacle course was set up using cones brought to the site by the Falls Church Sheriff's Office. The classroom portion of the course was held in the FCVFD meeting hall at Station 6.
