Independence Day - 2004
|
Ten FCVFD members participated in the annual Independence Day Parade and Firemen's Competition hosted by the City of Fairfax VFD. The FCVFD entered the parade with our 1918 Model T Ford staffed by Paul Melnick and Charles Harvey's grandson. Following the parade, two FCVFD teams participated with career and volunteer teams from across the region in the Lay-A-Line competition. This competition consisted of responding down University Drive, stopping at a prescribed location, connecting supply line to a hydrant, laying a supply line down to the next prescribed stopping point, deploying and charging a preconnected hoseline, and using the hoseline to knock down three targets. FCVFD Team 1, consisting of Paul Schomburg, Paul Melnick, Brian Holder, and Steve Sisler, placed 4th overall with a time of 1:15, one second behind the time posted by the ACFD Team. The first place team from the City of Fairfax posted a time of 54 seconds. FCVFD Team 2 composed of freshmen to the event, Tony Schloss, David Vilpors, Meredith Lahey, and Robin Davis, encountered difficulties with the pump and could not complete the evolution despite making a good run.
Two Falls Church teams also participated in the Battle of the Barrel competition. This game required two opposing teams to use 2.5" hoselines to propel a keg suspended on a wire across the finish line. Falls Church Team 2, Erik Strickland, Doug Briller, Tony Schloss, Robin Davis, and David Vilpors, advanced into the finals where they met their match against the Burke VFD team. Team 1, Paul Schomburg, Brian Holder, Steve Sisler, Paul Melnick, and Meredith Lahey, was knocked out early in the competition by the Centreville VFD team.
In recognition of their outstanding effort during the competition, Falls Church Team 2 won the Judge's Award.
On the following day, the FCVFD provided fire and EMS coverage for the annual City of Falls Church Independence Day festivities at George Mason High School. Eight volunteers staffed the FCVFD Utility, Ambulance, and Reserve Engine for the event. |
