Metro Maintenance Train Fire
|
This incident was originally dispatched as a construction accident at the East Falls Church Metro station on Interstate 66 near Sycamore Street. The injured operator of the maintenance train walked back to the Metro Station to report the emergency after the drive shaft of the train broke loose, punctured the diesel fuel tanks on the train, and caused a fire. The fire was fueled by a large volume of diesel fuel and oxy-acetylene cylinders. Several of the oxy-acetylene cylinders exploded in the heat of the fire and showered pieces of the tanks down on firefighters. The operation was further hampered by a lack of access to a water supply on the interstate. Supply lines were eventually dropped over the side of the overpass down to Engine 76. |
