6000 Wilson Boulevard

At approximately 2330 on December 24, 2000, Arlington ECC dispatched a full box assignment for fire coming from a house across from 6019 Wilson Boulevard. The first alarm consisted of Engines 102, 428, and 106, Truck 106, Medic 106, EMS 112, FM 114, and Battalion 112. Engine 102 marked on the scene with a 1 1/2-story single family dwelling with heavy fire showing from the second floor. Battalion 112 arrived shortly thereafter and requested a second alarm. The house had been vacant for some time and slated for demolition to expand the Upton Hill Regional Park. All of the windows and doors were boarded shut. Several 1 3/4" attack lines, a 2 1/2" attack line, and the leader line from Engine 106 were stretched up a long driveway to the house. The house sat about 100 feet back from Wilson Boulevard on a wooded lot. A decision was made early in the fire to perform the attack from the exterior due to the vacant status of the house and heavy volume of fire encountered. As the fire progressed through the upper level of the house, Truck 106 set up a ladder pipe operation. The ladder pipe operation, combined with hose streams from the 2 1/2" line in the rear and 1 3/4" lines on sides 3 and 4, knocked down the main body of fire in approximately 1 hour. Units remained on the scene until approximately 3am hitting hot spots and picking up equipment. Canteen 106, with assistance from the Auxiliary from Company 1, provided hot drinks and snacks. A rehab unit responded from the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department to provide a warm area of refuge for firefighters. The dwelling was essentially destroyed and the cause of the fire is unknown. The Light and Air unit was just going enroute to a public service to assist Arlington Police with lighting a crime scene at 4500 Four Mile Run Drive when the initial dispatch went out for the fire. The unit diverted immediately to the fire call, thus had a rapid response time to the fire.
