1st Annual ACFRA Driver Rodeo and Team Firefighting Competition
|
Inspired by our neighbors in the City of Fairfax, the Arlington County Fire and Rescue Association organized a skills competition on September 22, 2002. The event was held in the rear parking area of Falls Church High School at 9am. The competition consisted of two main events, a driving rodeo and a lay-a-line evolution.
Members from the Arlington VFD and Falls Church VFD participated in the driver rodeo using the FCVFD's reserve engine and medic. All drivers had to complete a course that included a serpentine, loading dock simulation, parallel parking, and lane change. A 10-second penalty was levied for knocking down a cone, and a 3-second penalty was incurred for "wobbling" a cone.
The results, with penalties included, were as follows:
Ambulance Driving:
2:35.82 Jim Clarke, FCVFD
2:36.12 Paul Schomburg, FCVFD
2:38.22 Steve Sisler, FCVFD
2:42.16 Pat Evinger, FCVFD
4:03.00 Brian Holder, FCVFD
4:11.25 Justin Kirby, FCVFD
4:38.44 Jay Gremillion, AVFD
Pumper Driving:
2:40.34 Steve Sisler, FCVFD
3:18.66 Jim Clarke, FCVFD
3:33.37 Pat Evinger, FCVFD
3:37.40 Paul Schomburg, FCVFD
4:27.22 Brian Holder, FCVFD
5:13.00 Jay Gremillion, AVFD
5:27.31 Justin Kirby, FCVFD
Three teams competed in the lay-a-line competition. Members from Arlington, Ballston, Clarendon, and Falls Church formed 4-person teams for the event. Reserve Engine 106 was used by all three teams to stop at the hydrant, connect a supply line, drive to a predetermined spot, deploy an attack line, and knock down three targets with the hose stream. Steve Sisler graciously served as the driver/operator for two teams.
The lay-a-line results were as follows:
1:09 Schomburg/Sisler/Holder/Evinger
1:20 Ingles (Co.2)/Hammer (Co.4)/Schoenfeld (Co.4)/Doyle (Co.2)
2:02 Kirby/Gremillion (Co.1)/Schloss/Sisler
Many thanks to FCVFD Lieutenant Brian Holder for organizing the event and handling the logistics involved in securing a location and traffic cones. |
